    short story definition

We are seeking original and engaging stories in the George MacDonald and/or Michael Phillips tradition, up to 15,000 words in length. • Contest Rules

    • All entrants to the Adult contest must have read at least one full-length George MacDonald or Michael Phillips fiction book (excluding short stories.)
    • Submissions from an author under 16 years of age are allowed into the Adult contest, but authors 16 or older are not allowed in the Youth contest.

    • Entries must be between 4,000 and 15,000 words.
    • Entries must be submitted with full true name, no pseudonyms.
    • Entries must be a complete story. Exception will be granted for a longer story if your short story gets away from you. In this case, only the first 15,000 words will be considered.  In addition, a summary of the rest of the story must be provided.
    • Suggested genres include: historical or contemporary realistic fiction, mystery fiction, theological fiction, personal quest fiction, realistic fantasy (in which real people encounter the world of fantasy.)  Discouraged genres would include: pure romance fiction, pure science fiction, monster/vampire/occult  ”edgy” fiction. In general we are looking for well-written classic fiction in the tradition of George MacDonald, carried into our time by Michael Phillips, rather than “modern” fiction types.
    • Entries must be previously unpublished material to which the author has complete rights.
    • Entries must convey the Christian values of our two authors, and must strictly adhere to the biblical standards for morality. In addition, the stories must be acceptable for all ages, so no "adult themes" or language will be allowed.
    • First time, unpublished, authors will be judged less strictly than writing professionals and previously published authors.

    • Entries must be submitted before midnight on the day the all clear is given by the US government for the Coronavirus outbreak (the day that all restrictions on travel and socialization are lifted) OR July 4th, 2020, whichever is first.  (Rules amended to add midnight, Monday, June 15, 2020 as the earliest date the contest will end (even if the "al clear" has been given).
    • Entries must be submitted in one of these formats: Word, Rich Text File, Google Doc, Text File.
    • Entries must be submitted by purchasing an entry from Wise Path Books and sending the document via email.  (You will receive several emails once you pre-register, so just reply to one of them.).  It is highly recommended to purchase the submission prior to the deadline, as the included PDF of Principles of Writing Craft by Michael Phillips forms the basis for our judging criteria.
    • Late entries will not be accepted.
All rules subject to change, based on future events.
  • Short Story Submissions

Adult ($15) and Youth ($5) submissions may be purchased at Wise Path Books.
